Choose between three formats for Splinterlands ranked play: Modern, Wild, and Survival.
Modern Format
Modern will always contain cards from the two most recent sets. Currently, those sets are Rebellion and Conclave Arcana.
- Modern format is free to play, and each battle costs 1 energy, which is automatically regenerated.
- The Foundations Set is playable in Modern and Wild formats.
Wild Format
Wild Format allows all cards that Splinterlands has printed thus far. This includes Alpha, Beta, Untamed, Dice, Chaos Legion, Rebellion, Conclave Arcana, and all Reward and Promo cards.
- Playing Wild Format requires the purchase of the Wild Pass each season.
-
Players of Wild Format need roughly double the staked SPS to maintain the same Reward Multiplier as before.
Survival Mode
Just as with Wild Format, all cards that Splinterlands has printed thus far may be used in Survival mode. In this mode, players may use each copy of an individual card instead of one copy at the highest level.
A few points differentiate survival more from modern and wild formats:
- No energy is required to battle - players can battle as much as they are able!
- When a card dies in a Survival mode battle, it will not be able to be used again until it is revived.
- Cards must be flagged to play in Survival Mode. Review the FAQ to learn more about managing your collection with survival mode in mind.
- Foundations Cards are unavailable in Survival Mode.
Card Sets
Previously, cards were grouped by Edition. The move to Modern and Wild Formats prompted the need to group cards by Set. Currently, there are 5 sets.
- Alpha Set: Alpha + Promo cards with Alpha borders
- Beta Set: Beta + Promo cards with Beta borders + Reward cards with Beta borders
- Untamed Set: Untamed + Promo cards with Untamed borders + Reward cards with Untamed borders + Dice edition
- Chaos Legion Set: Chaos Legion + Promo cards with Chaos Legion borders + Reward cards with Chaos Legion borders + Riftwatchers edition
- Rebellion Set: Rebellion + Promo cards with Rebellion borders + Reward cards with Rebellion borders.
- Conclave Arcana Set: Conclave Arcana + Promo cards with Conclave Arcana borders + Reward cards with Rebellion borders.
- Foundations Set: Foundations cards with wooden borders.

How Can I Tell Whether a Card is Modern or Wild at a Glance?
Compare the frames. Alpha, Beta, Untamed, and Chaos Legion frames are considered wild. Rebellion and Conclave Arcana-style frames are considered Modern. Eventually, you will be able to tell whether a card has a Modern or Wild frame at a glance!
Our marketplace and items pages allow you to sort by format. Use the All or Modern filters to sort.
How Do Rewards Work in Modern and Wild?
In Modern and Wild Formats, players battle to earn Glint, a currency that can be spent in the Rewards Shop. Wild players need about 50% more staked SPS to maintain the same Reward Multipliers. At the end of each season, players will earn Glint based on their final rating (RATING^3/300000). A 5,000 rating cap applies.
What About Gladiator Cards?
Gladiator cards are not included in a set, as previously defined. They will only be usable in battles or brawls when the Are you not entertained? modifier or conscript archon is in play.
