This guide is for those users who want to open a Hive wallet for other external applications and do not require access to the Splinterlands platform and rewards ecosystem. If you need access to a Hive wallet for a service that does not, or at least does not 'yet' provide some form of starter kit that helps create a wallet for you on the platform that you seek access to - then the information provided below should offer you enough resources to gain some level of understanding for the available options to have your new wallet created.
There are a variety of options you may select from, as listed below, but in the following guide, we will use hiveonboard as an example for the walkthrough process. Other processes should be similar, though they may require additional information or payment to generate your new account.
Note: If you have purchased a Splinterlands spellbook, you already have an active Hive wallet after successfully creating your unique username for your Splinterlands account. Click the appropriate links to learn how to claim your keys and/or use the recommended login method for private keys via Hive Keychain on desktop or mobile.
Creating a Hive Wallet
Step 1: First, go to https://hiveonboard.com/ and click the Create Account button on the webpage.
Step 2: Next, you will want to enter a unique username not occupied by another user, which the field should check for you to let you know whether your selected name is available. After agreeing to their terms of service by clicking on the checkbox, click on the continue button to proceed.
Step 3: Please make sure that you back up a file containing your keys in one or preferably multiple safe places such as thumb drives. The website allows you to download a new text file or copy the information ready to paste on an available file you might have, containing details of your private keys. It is essential that you do not lose these keys and keep them out of the hands of others you are not willing to trust with them, including websites. Be very careful of whose links you click, as someone may have fabricated a fake webpage to retrieve access to users' keys, so please always check URLs before entering any private keys for logins.
Step 4: After you have backed your private keys up to a safe location, read through some safety tips and click on the checkbox acknowledging that you have read this. Proceed by clicking on the Create Hive Account link.
Your account has now been successfully created. You can now log into any sites that offer Hive accounts as a login option. If you want to make logins via Hive even more accessible, we recommend utilizing the Hive Keychain desktop browser extension or mobile application (with a built-in browser).
Hive keychain will allow you to import your keys into the extension/application and allow you to create a local password for the keychain on your device to access permissions provided by your keys, removing the need to enter your private key for each login and each transaction depending on your settings.
